HEDERA is a monumental light sculpture installed at the Prospect Park Bandshell in Brooklyn, its dome-like form rising above the lawn in a flowing canopy of red and white LED tubing that mirrors the park’s own vegetation while enveloping its community in shared light.

  • Commissioned by BRIC for its 40th anniversary season, HEDERA was installed at Prospect Park in June 2018 so that the hundreds of thousands of people who frequent the park, including those attending the summer concert series, could experience the work and even dance beneath it.
  • Forbes (2018) reported that Amorós chose the sculpture’s vibrant red to contrast with the meadow’s lush green, with the title HEDERA, Latin for ivy, and the dome-like form drawn directly from the natural beauty of the park’s plant life.
  • New York Magazine’s Bedford + Bowery (2018) described the installation as draped with 2,000 square feet of LED lights and tubes bearing a strong resemblance to plant tendrils, transitioning from translucent white to blood red beneath the canopy.
  • Viewers who walk into the center of HEDERA see their own reflection in the overhead dome, transforming passive spectatorship into active self-recognition.
  • HEDERA received coverage in Forbes, The New York Times T Magazine, New York Magazine, and Arte al Día (all 2018), affirming the work’s resonance with both the Brooklyn community and the broader landscape of contemporary public art in New York City.
  • HEDERA is a project created in honor of BRIC’s Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival. The piece’s overall structure was inspired by the bandshell stage, as well as the natural beauty and grandeur of the vegetation in the park. The sculpture is raised above the grass while its dome shape envelopes the audience.

The work is a lighting sculpture that interacts with the Brooklyn community; it does not interrupt the environment’s flow through its lighting sequence but rather amplifies it. The structure of red and white tubings is engrossed by light. When the viewer walks into the center of HEDERA, they will see their reflection in the cupolas. Thus, the piece cultivates a relationship between public space and community through the conversation it generates.

At the nucleus of the piece, visitors will see smaller protruding domes to relate to a plant’s central bud. With groups of people under the structure, the reflective shadows can give an image of a flower blooming.

HEDERA creates a space where concepts, thoughts, and experiences converge to inspire change. It is a wish for the sculpture coexist with its viewers, bringing them closer to an ideal world where individuals can unite in celebration of diversity and a shared humanity.

Description: In time for their 40th anniversary season, BRIC commissioned Grimanesa Amorós to create HEDERA.
