At the building’s entrance, a light sculpture installed on the ceiling welcomes visitors. A dome-shaped object, resembling a string of bubbles, emits a soft glow. Filling her fifth-floor studio are curved tubes that resemble spatial drawings. Inside those tubes, thousands of points of light expand and fade. Kinetic and organic. The subtly tinted lights create a feast of seven colors through the curves.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>“The computer-controlled lighting system is designed with the location and people’s movement in mind.”\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>“The studio is like a lab. What you see here is a mock-up. The actual work must be about five meters tall.”\r\nThe completed piece was permanently installed last autumn in a sculpture hall in Mexico City.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>“The tubes are made of polycarbonate. It’s more durable than glass and flexible, too. Since the light inside is LED—here, touch it—it stays cool.”\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>Her works, which viewers are encouraged to touch or walk through, are approachable and well-suited to outdoor exhibitions. Amorós is also enthusiastic about collaborative projects with architects.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>Originally from Peru, Amorós came to New York in the mid-1980s.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\u003Cp>At first, she focused on painting, but after moving into her current, spacious studio, she realized her dream of creating three-dimensional works. However, after giving birth and raising her child, she stepped away from art for a while. The events of 9\u002F11 in 2001 also forced her to evacuate her studio temporarily. During that time, traveling through her homeland became a turning point. The floating islands made of totora reeds on Lake Titicaca in the Andes, and the transparent light that never changes from sunrise to sunset—these natural experiences inspired her deeply.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>Even as she pursues cutting-edge materials and technology, she says she wants to express “what is closest to me.”\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\u003Cp>The luminous drawings
