Introducer:
Dr. Lou Yongqi, Dean of Tongji University’s College of Design and Innovation
Tongji University is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in China. Founded in 1907 by the German government and physicians in Shanghai, it is renowned for its engineering, business, and architecture programs.
Design education at Tongji began in the 1940s and was deeply influenced by the German Bauhaus school. The university’s architectural education emphasizes an “absorbing and inclusive” learning style. The Department of Art and Design began enrolling undergraduate students in 1986, further solidifying its commitment to creativity and innovation.
Recently, Tongji University hosted renowned artist Grimanesa Amorós for an insightful and engaging lecture. Amorós shared her creative process and the philosophy behind her immersive light installations. She discussed how her work bridges art, technology, and cultural identity, offering a fresh perspective on contemporary art.
Amorós’s talk was particularly impactful for the students. She connected deeply with them, sharing her journey as an artist and the challenges she has overcome. Her ability to merge art, science, and emotion resonated with the audience, inspiring them to think creatively and critically.
The event highlighted the transformative power of art in fostering innovation and dialogue. Amorós’s work aligns with Tongji’s mission to promote interdisciplinary learning and creativity. Her lecture left a lasting impression on students and faculty alike.
Tongji University continues to host events that bring together artists, thinkers, and students. These gatherings provide opportunities for learning, networking, and collaboration. By fostering meaningful interactions, the university empowers individuals to engage with art and culture in new ways.

(00:29) …and a great speaker, Grimanesa Amorós. So, I will give a very brief introduction. Grimanesa encounters viewers from all different backgrounds and communities. She inspires others to become agents of empowerment. So, welcome, Grimanesa.
(01:03) Thank you all for coming. (Speaking Mandarin: “Xièxiè dàjiā jīntiān de guānlín.”) Today, I will be talking about site-specific installations. I am going to have (be) talking about the Uros series and the Huanchaco series. The Uros is made by the Totora reeds, which they dry. Bundles are able to make these floating islands.
(01:55) (Question regarding the major challenges of the giant installation)
(02:00) I think that size surely matters, and it depends on your work, and then technology. But also the human contact, we mustn’t forget. It’s a balance in between. Um, for all of you that you’re working with design, with innovation…
(02:15) We can again enchant the light in the dark. So, yes, thank you very much. (Speaking Mandarin: “Xièxiè.”)
