MAC Lima

The Museum of Contemporary Art of Lima (MAC Lima) opened in 2013 in Lima’s bohemian neighborhood of Barranco. It originated from a private initiative by collectors, researchers, and artists. In the 1950s, they formed the Institute of Contemporary Art (IAC) to promote modern and contemporary art.

MAC Lima is the only museum in Lima that specializes in modern and contemporary art. Its modernist building, designed by Peruvian architect Frederick Cooper Llosa, is a landmark of cultural and architectural significance. The museum showcases works by both local and international artists, fostering dialogue and innovation.

Recently, MAC Lima hosted renowned artist Grimanesa Amorós for an insightful talk. Amorós shared her artistic practice and the philosophy behind her immersive light installations. She discussed how her work bridges art, technology, and cultural identity, offering a fresh perspective on contemporary art.

Amorós explained how her installations transform spaces and engage viewers. She emphasized the importance of art in fostering reflection and dialogue. Her ability to merge art, science, and emotion resonated deeply with the audience.

(01:00) Ha sido una colaboración fantástica y gracias a Gonzalo Gutiérrez, al equipo del MAC, que son todos muy profesionales. También es muy especial para mí, es la primera vez que estoy acá en el Perú, haciendo una conferencia, así que es un poco emotivo. Una colaboración con Ivri Lider, que es un compositor y un músico muy reconocido en Israel.

(01:23) Él hizo la música para un video Miranda, el concepto de la exposición es Teclara para el espectador. Tienen muchos breaks, ¿no? A las ocho de la mañana, después de dos horas. Tuve la oportunidad de hacer un trabajo para el Hotel Península de Nueva York, y para mí fue bastante, es que cuando salí de mi reunión, después de cualquier…Un coleccionista privado acá en Lima, se me está enamorando para mí porque es mi primera escultura.

(02:05) …La relación tiene con el museo, por qué es importante esa ciudad. Se adapta a los sitios específicos, entonces el público, no solamente… Un poco a la naturaleza. Mi trabajo está destinado, tratando de poder hacer lo mismo, haciéndome muchos esfuerzos para ver… No, creo que me gusta dormir tranquilo, sabiendo que, digamos, todo perfecto está bien, y yo creo que eso es importante para la combinación.

(02:51) Como te digo, son desde el año 2005 hasta el 2000, y sabés y sé que la pieza está funcionando perfectamente.

(03:07) Cada obra, en realidad, es como si fuera la primera vez que la estoy haciendo. Y lo que sí trato es que en ese momento… La pieza ya está lista, pero el edificio recién está poniendo los cementos. Muchísimas gracias a todos por venir a escucharme. Ojalá que tengamos otra oportunidad.
