OCUPANTE is a monumental light sculpture that fills its host space with an 80-foot network of intertwined LED tubing, transforming the viewer from passive observer into active occupant of a space defined by borders, division, and the shared longing for human connection.

  • At 80 feet wide, the full installation and companion video work were presented at the Ludwig Museum Koblenz in 2016, with the video component traveling to Tabacalera Promoción del Arte in Madrid in 2018, one of Spain’s most significant state-run contemporary art spaces.
  • The Ludwig Museum’s location at the Deutsche Eck, where three fragments of the Berlin Wall stand as a memorial to the victims of division, was central to OCUPANTE’s conceptual foundation, with Amorós selecting the site specifically for this layered history.
  • In her catalogue essay, Ludwig Museum director Dr. Beate Reifenscheid wrote that for Amorós, light is space, movement, and time simultaneously, drawing from the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers at the Deutsche Eck.
  • The exhibition catalogue, published by Hirmer, one of Germany’s most prestigious art book publishers, features essays by Dr. Beate Reifenscheid and curator Andreas Backoefer alongside a conversation between Amorós and Tim Goossens.
  • OCUPANTE received coverage in El País, Surface Magazine, Art Aurea, and Descubrir el Arte (2016–2018), affirming its position as one of the most conceptually rigorous commissions in Amorós’s practice to date.
  • The Ludwig Museum is a significant historical landmark at the iconic “Deutsche Eck” (German Corner). Within this symbolic space, fragments of the Berlin Wall pay tribute to the “victims of the division,” reminding us of the detrimental consequences of borders on human connections and cultural exchange.

OCUPANTE aims to transcend these barriers and forge meaningful connections between individuals and cultures. This sculpture embodies the aspirations of a harmonious and interconnected world where dreams and realities coexist, and cultural exchange thrives. By inviting viewers to enter the museum space, OCUPANTE blurs the line between observer and occupant, encouraging active participation and engagement. It serves as a poignant reminder of the transformative potential when we bridge divides and embrace the richness of diverse perspectives.

This lighting sculpture fosters connection. It serves as a living testament to the power of culture, inspiring creativity and nurturing a vibrant global community.
