WATCH YOUR STEP is a light sculpture presented at The FLAG Art Foundation in Chelsea as part of the summer 2012 group exhibition of the same name. Its LED form evokes the delicate, constantly maintained surfaces of the Uros Islands of Lake Titicaca in a work that translates the fragility and resilience of those living reed islands into a luminous sculptural encounter.

  • Presented at The FLAG Art Foundation, founded in 2008 by collector Glenn Fuhrman and among New York’s most significant nonprofit contemporary art spaces, WATCH YOUR STEP was included in a group exhibition examining the relationship between artworks and the floor alongside Kiki Smith, Richard Serra, Lynda Benglis, Tara Donovan, and Felix Gonzalez-Torres, among others.
  • The exhibition ran from June 7 through August 24, 2012, with the FLAG Art Foundation’s kunsthalle-style format and commitment to free public access ensuring that WATCH YOUR STEP reached a broad and diverse Chelsea audience throughout the summer season.
  • Rooted in the Uros series, the work translates the layered totora reed surfaces of Lake Titicaca’s floating islands into a sculptural language of light, evoking both the fragility of those handmade living structures and the extraordinary resilience of the Uros people who have maintained them for centuries.
  • The work continues Amorós’s sustained meditation on the relationship between the viewer, the floor, and the sculptural form, with the light sequence shifting in response to the viewer’s movement around the work and creating a quietly immersive encounter within the intimate scale of the gallery.

    Inspired by the floating Uros Islands of Lake Titicaca, which are handmade from layers of totora reeds by the Uros people of Peru, WATCH YOUR STEP reflects the delicate, constantly maintained surfaces that form these islands.
