As If Magazine Issue 21 Grimanesa Amoros x Maya Hawke

GRIMANESA AMORÓS x MAYA HAWKE is a light-inspired cover collaboration for AS IF Magazine Issue 21, in which Amorós enveloped actress and singer-songwriter Maya Hawke in custom-built LED tubing structures photographed by editor-in-chief Tatijana Shoan, uniting two practices bound by a shared pursuit of light as both medium and metaphor.

  • AS IF Magazine (2022) brought together Amorós and Hawke around the central theme of Hawke’s sophomore album Moss, whose sustained meditation on inner light, described by Hawke as glowing in the dark and swallowing the moon, made the collaboration with the world’s foremost LED light sculptor a natural convergence of two creative languages.
  • For the shoot, Amorós choreographed her custom LED tubing structures around Hawke’s body in real time using a computer-controlled lighting system, comparing the process to composing music in which every note has its precise moment in time and space.
  • Page Six (2022) covered the cover’s release, noting Hawke’s striking resemblance to her mother Uma Thurman within Amorós’s ethereal light environment, while Daily Mail UK (2022) described the shoot as glowing and light-inspired, extending the collaboration’s reach to international entertainment and cultural audiences.
