ONKOCHISHIN
Akiko Elizabeth Maie | New York, NY
ONKOCHISHIN is a light sculpture installation and fashion exhibition event created in collaboration with Japanese fashion designer Akiko Elizabeth Maie of Nepenthes America Inc., its title drawn from the Japanese principle of discovering new horizons by researching the past, uniting two practices rooted in precision, cultural memory, and the transformative power of material and light.
- The collaboration united Amorós’s LED light sculpture practice with Akiko Elizabeth Maie’s fashion collection, with the works presented together as a single immersive event that treated clothing and light as equally expressive, equally architectural mediums.
- The title ONKOCHISHIN derives from the Japanese proverb 温故知新, meaning to discover new things by studying the old, a philosophy that resonates equally across Amorós’s sustained excavation of pre-Incan cultural heritage and Akiko Elizabeth Maie’s approach to Japanese craft and textile tradition.
- Musée Magazine (2014) covered ONKOCHISHIN, situating the collaboration within the broader landscape of art and fashion crossover events in New York and recognizing both Amorós and Akiko Elizabeth Maie as boundary-dissolving practitioners working at the edge of their respective disciplines.
- Sponsored by Hiro Sake and Masyu Yaki and presented in conjunction with Nepenthes America Inc., ONKOCHISHIN affirms Amorós’s sustained engagement with Japanese culture, design, and craft philosophy that runs from her encounter with the lotus flower in Shanghai to her residency experience at Ritsurin Garden.
AKIKO ELIZABETH MAIE, the fashion designer from Nepenthes AMERICA INC., in collaboration with multidisciplinary artist Grimanesa Amoros, is proud to present ONKOCHISHIN: a light sculpture installation and fashion exhibition event.
